Thursday, March 18, 2010 ![]() Do you see this when you look up in the sky or any bright surface? Well, if you do, then you're not alone! I actually do see these too when I look directly at bright objects. I thought its the most peculiar little thing. This phenomena is called "floaters" Shapes differ between person to person, but I see a big blob of string and a "string of pearls" Not knowing what it was before, I thought it was bacteria or some other microorgansims and thought I was special, able to see microscopic objects not usually visible to the naked eye. I actually wasn't far off...Here's an excerpt for Wikipedia Floaters are deposits of various size, shape, consistency, refractive index, and motility within the eye's vitreous humour.Floaters are visible because of the shadows they cast on the retina or their refraction of the light that passes through them, and can appear alone or together with several others in one's field of vision. They may appear as spots, threads, or fragments of cobwebs, which float slowly before the sufferer's eyes. I used to worry about it sometimes but I dismissed it. I stumbled upon the article by accident and it's description suited what I experienced to a T. Turns out it is quite common but more common to people in their 30s...No treatment is needed. But some of the causes of floaters do worry me a bit as some of them do cause blindness, but I'll have to just keep tabs on this whole matter. |
